Ever have a day where you're just irrationally happy? I think today is like that for me. If the sun comes out and the weather holds, I think I'll sit outside and read with a big, dumb grin on my face.

There are some weeks you just can't catch a break. Apparently I lost my wallet yesterday. I'm pulling out all the stops in finding it and I haven't given up hope... but I still had to cancel my credit cards and start inquiries into replacing the various other useful bits I keep in there. Had to bike 6 miles each way to the license bureau in the hopes that I could get a duplicate sent to me before I get on the plane to Indianapolis (and Gen-Con). They claim to have a turnaround of just a week... but I am skeptical. So, if anyone knows if there's any way to prove to [sigh] airport security I am who I claim to be other than photo ID, or, how to get some sort of acceptable ID in a made by someone by the 15th, please let me know.

Apparently one of my law schools will take me. William Mitchell, conveniently located in the Twin Cities. Not highly ranked nationally, but they have a strong regional reputation and offered a pretty sweet tuition deal, so I'll definitely give the matter some thought.

All in all, a load off my mind, but there are a number of other places I've yet to hear back from, and of course, the Comps Beast is ever-lurking.

There's no time like when you have some paper due to write in livejournal. To be brief, I'm still alive and well, though last week I was just in a weird state of mind.

No, I mean weirder than usual.

But it's mostly passed, and I think I've a handle on classes for this week. But then the ERPL beast strikes this weekend, and like a fool, I will play just about everything. Except just this once I will take a pass on Death's Grey Land and go on what the college insists I call a "Set Up Your Roommate" date. Yay, awkward conversation. Probably a fate worse than getting eaten by zombies in a Gothic Horror RPG, but I'm a glutton for punishment.

Back to my paper now. Five out of five pages left ;)

Less than I intend

Classes go well so far. I received the "intent to graduate" thing, and had it filled and returned within the hour, so I guess that makes this all the big leagues now.

Doubly so, for Matthew has promised to print me a hat reading "mad people skillz" in recognition of my ability to con [note: sarcasm in the use of that last word] my NSW group into liking me.

That's all the news that's fit for me to type instead of spending that time on homework. Except for one slightly gross bit. I seem to have gotten a contact lens stuck somewhere beyond one of my eyelids, squarely out of my reach. It's slightly uncomfortable, and it's just plain not supposed to be there. Any of my readers have any advice for dealing with this?

I am now awake again, after falling into a veritable hibernation cycle for 14 hours. And reviewing my last post (I didn't really remember much from it save the "I can do pull-ups! w00t!" portion) seems to confirm a lack of sleep does indeed make me wiggy.

Some friends will be in town today, so I am quite pleased. We're thinking of going to see Snakes on a Plane... so that upgrades to "as punch."

In other news, in preparation for shipping out to Northfield, I managed to find my razor, thus putting an end to the reign of the Sketchy Summer Beard. (And it was most sketchy. It's probably a good thing no pictures survive.)

Obligatory fanboy moment

Watched Angel Season 2 on DVD this past week. I'm reminded why I think it can make a claim for "best season of the show" status. Basically, I think the show really came into it's own this season. In seasons 3-4 things arguably got too Soap-y, and Season 1 was pretty uneven in quality. S2 has the right amount of darkness, but I think it has it with just the right gallows humor thrown in. And the dialogue is just the freshest and funniest the who ever had. (From memory, and slightly paraphrased, the gems include: "So you solved the mystery and came here without backup. Wow, you must be, like, the best cop ever!"; "Well boo-hoo. Let me wipe away the tears with my plastic hand."; "Listen, fellas, I really had no idea about the whole destroying-the-world thing... Anyways, do you like beer?" )

OK, 'tis time for me to pack it up to Cleveland for the week. Is anyone besides teylaspeople in that general area? If so, leave a comment or drop me an email

I played Soccer with some kids in the park this evening (they were on average about 2-3 years younger than me, so no, I was not a god among midgets). The field was scaled down, making it a high-scoring game. I was in goal the whole time, and unlike at college, my team won, 9-8, with probably more shots on our goal, so I felt valuable. There were a lot of players, packed densely in the field, so things got a little fast and loose with the rules. There were many a handball, and a couple collisions that were probably avoidable. I got pretty into it towards the end, as we were tied at 8 and decided next point would win; at one point I declared "Don't go getting up in my Cool-Aid -- it's fucking poisoned!" and when before a goal-kick I declared to the opposing team "Now you've got tickets to the gun show!' and peeled my shirt off.

My best moment: When I took a ball to the face that knocked off my glasses, then flailed blindly but quite effectively until I got the ball out of my nest.

My worst moment: The other goalie had a really strong leg, so one of his goal kicks flew a good three quarters of the field and bounced off one of my teammate's head in such a way that it went directly past me into the goal.

I saw "Anatomy of a Murder" with the folks Saturday (thanks to Netflix; and "Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter" is on the way). It had a slightly older Jimmy Stewart as a self professed "simple country lawyer" defending a murder suspect. Of course, Stewart's character is actually possessed of a lovable, base cunning, and how can I resist a film with lines like "Never trust a man who drinks gin," and "I fooled my lawyer, I'm gonna fool that judge, and I'm gonna fool that bunch of corncobbers on the jury!" Actually (and my parents, both lawyers, concur with me on this), aside from a few wonderful Dramatic Outbursts, the trial looked a lot closer to a real court proceeding than those of most present-day TV shows and movies.

Then yesterday we visited my grandparents at their lake cabin, at the height of the heat wave. Their un-airconditioned cabin. I don't think it's safe for them, being in their 80s and 90s. I had to spend the afternoon sitting in the lake just to think straight. And it's not just the cabin; they don't have AC at their house in Moorhead either. It seems to be a point of pride with them, but it's incredibly foolish at their age. I made my mom promise to me she wouldn't be "a stubborn old person" and she laughed (partly because these are her in-laws we're talking about).

In the larger picture, summer break is starting to wear thin with me, as I am essentially isolated from most human contact and don't feel at all challenged or even occupied much of the time. But soon we'll be driving down to see my mom's side of the family in Cleveland, so I'll try to find stuff in a bona fide city to do. I may be incommunicado for a few days because of this, but I assure you all I'll be back.

I got up at 3:00 pm and I can't think of anything else to talk about today, so feast your eyes on the (sort of) inspiration for my username. Many of you have probably heard me wax poetic about this on Caucus, but for those who haven't, what we have here is from ALL-STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #2 by Frank Miller of SIN CITY fame. The thing to remember about Miller is that he's insane. When asked why his Batman is such a dick his reply was "He may be a dick but he's our dick." He says his next project is titled HOLY TERROR, BATMAN! and described as "Batman vs Al Qaeda in the streets of Gotham". (Click on image for better resolution)

I think I broke the Star Trek personality quiz (tried posting it here but LF just spit up some gobbledygook), but it said I was Picard. I can live with that.

In other news, I've seen a lot of movie musicals lately. "The Producers" (Nathan Lane version) is truly great. I have to say I hated "Rent". It had a weak plot that seemed to exist for the sole purpose of dragging us from one unimpressive song-and-dance to the next. Seriously, if only one song from a two-hour musical sticks with me at all I call the enterprise a failure. "Reefer Madness" is genius; I'd say it topples "Little Shop of Horrors" for title of Best Truly Weird Musical Comedy. With room to spare.

But the true masterpiece of our times has got to be R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet". Essentially, it's the same song over forty minutes divided into Twelve Acts, each detailing the discovery of one character or another's marital infidelities, and each topping the last for farcical content (the final quarter of the film involves a midget gigolo named Big Man). With lines like "now he's opening the closet, I pull out my Beretta" and "oh my God, a rubber!" I wouldn't bet against R. Kelly's unironic assertion in the commentary-- that "Trapped in the Closet" will be a classic long after the Kelly himself is forgotten. Do yourselves a favor and track this one down. Watch it with friends.

Hello readers, as long as I'm here I figured I'd let it be know what I've been up to these past couple months.

After bumming around Northfield during Senior Week, I came home and have been largely bumming around here ever since (but first my parents dragged me to a wedding and forced me to sing karaoke at the reception *shudder*). Home is a bit less fun as I tend to have far fewer friends around, though I've managed to hang out with a couple folks from my old high school. But the main event as far as human interaction goes was my trip to the Cities last week. I got to crash at the house of a friend who goes for Macalaster (so of course I spent the whole time reassuring the lad that there's no shame in going to that particular small midwestern liberal arts college and it's absolutely as good as any other *joke*) and some of our other high school friends drove up from the various corners of the state they've dispersed to. We caught up on old times and explored the Twin Cities a bit. Ate at a nice Ethiopian restauraunt, went to a too-trendy-for-its-own-good bar, got ice cream from a top 10 ranked national parlor, and checked out the Axman surplus store (where I picked up a plastic Batman tie for 50 cents--apparently sometime in the early 90s someone made a few hundred more of those than the market could bear-- and proceeded to wear it; note that wearing such a tie over a blood-red Hawaiian shirt generates compliments from many a passerby, the genuiness of which I decline to question). I also introduced my friends to my Battlestar Galactica, to mixed reactions, but I guess we can't expect everyone to have any taste.

Also in the Cities (but not with my friends) I went to a new exhibit at the Science Museum called Body World. For those of you who haven't heard of this, it's a collection of cadavers stripped to give us a view of various tissues and encased in plastic for preservation. The bodies are in various poses (usually athletic ones) both to see the muscles in these positions and for the sake of giving the exhibit an artistic touch. It was pretty neat, and not as gross as it might sound (except for the smoker's lung; that was fairly disgusting). My favorite piece was the complete circulatory system, right down to the capillaries, that had every other part of the body removed. This was accomplished by pumping some sort of plastic right throught the veins until it was everywhere and then stripping all the other tissue out with acid.

Although I'm pretty isolated at home I try to keep myself busy. I've been studying for the LSATs, but I've been trying not to go to fast on that because I don't want to run out of practice tests a month before I take the real thing. Doing some recreational reading (latest books are One Bullet Away by Nathaniel Fick, a solid memoir of Marine officer, and Outbound Flight by Timothy Zahn, the latest Star Wars book--it was fine, but there were no surprises in it, par for the Zahn course of late). Right now I'm playing Jedi Academy on my Xbox, it's a fun game, and pretty enough, but I'm glad it keeps the missions short.

I've also been renting and watching a metric arseload of movies. I've only seen one film ("Nacho Libre" with Jack Black) in theaters since getting home, but most of the options haven't appealed to me and Pirates hasn't made its way to my town yet. And here we have a convenient segue to the new somethingawful flash movie: "THIS SUMMER!" (see link)

In sort of disappointing news, I seem to have less of a job this summer than I thought I'd had. I work for a small construction firm that puts up grain bins. When we have a job its long hours, but we only have a job when someone calls us up and the material for the bin has been delivered. When that happens its a lengthy process of bolting ring after ring of steel plates together (our last bin had a diameter of 36 feet and required us to insert and tighten some 10,000 bolts by my estimate). When that doesn't happen I get to sit at home, much as I am doing now, and wish I were back at school.

Ah well, that's how it goes. Hope the folks reading this are doing well. More updates whenever I get to it.
